Samuel or Eli?

My friend Pete has got me thinking. He led a devotional recently on the call of Samuel in the Old Testament (1 Samuel 3) and I’ve been gripped by the story ever since.
Look at the cast:
Eli – a failure as a priest, destined to be the last of his line who yet is able to glimpse God in the mysterious call that keeps coming to Samuel.
Samuel – a young boy, eager and yet never introduced to the Lord, who listens to God’s strange message and believes it.
God – who reveals his passion for people. Even when those supposed to represent him fail he manages to move the mantle to another, more receptive, servant.
Who am I? Am I an Eli – too afraid to rock the boat and so letting stuff just dribble on?
Can I be a Samuel – able to listen and obey.
