Today – the place where Jesus begins

Inspired by a great thought from Fred B Craddock’s commentary on Luke in the Interpretation series. He points out that, in the way Luke structures his Gospel, Jesus’ first word in his adult ministry is ‘today’. Luke 4: 16-30.

Jesus is preaching in his home synagogue with Mum and Dad looking on, his brothers and sisters sitting there as well and the community paying attention. He reads a prophecy from Isaiah offering hope of what the Messiah would do for Israel and the downtrodden people, then in effect points to himself and says: ‘Today’.

It’s just about the shortest text I’ve ever preached on but I’m working on it.
